Mt Olympus

On Sunday Dad and I went flying in our friends BO105 helicopter to Mount Olympus in Kahurangi National Park. On Mount Olympus there were very big rocks and the rocks were all limestone with sand in them. The rocks look different to any other rocks I've seen before.

Mt Olympus is really special because my Grandad saw the rocks one day when he was flying over and told the Lord of the Rings film scouts that they should do filming there.

I hid under the same rock that the hobbits hid under when the spy crows came. The place in the movies is called South of Rivendell.

There is no walking track to Mount Olympus the only way to get there is by helicopter.

Ollie and Russ have been busy.

 It’s Ollie and Russ here. We have been doing so much exploring this week. We went to Waitangi on Monday and then came to a place called Hohoura which is really far north. We are staying at a camping ground where there are people fishing and catching snapper just off the beach. Today we went to Cape Reinga and learned about the Māori spirits leaving here to travel back to their ancestors homeland in the pacific. It was such a sunny day we could see the Three Kings Islands. 

There are some giant sand dunes up here at a place called Te Paki. We had so much fun going down them on our body boards. They are so steep and high and we went so fast.

The Parrot Place by Russ

 

The Parrot Place

My family and I are staying in Kerikeri for a couple of weeks. Today we went to a place called The Parrot Place. There we so many parrots and we went into a big outdoor cage and the parrots all flew around and landed on us. They really liked the seeds and nuts we had to feed them.

When I first went in there were big parrots and their favourite thing to eat was the peanuts still in their shells. They flew right up to me and took them.

My favourite parrot was a little Masked Lorikeet called Pompom and she came and landed on me but didn’t want food, only cuddles and when I opened my mouth to talk she tried to clean my teeth with her beak.

There was also a big cockatoo who danced and when he had finished his dance he would try to peck my eye.
